Blackbear U19 Girls Advance to Regional Semi-Finals - For the first time in Maine history, a girls team from Maine advanced out of the group stage to the playoff round at the prestigious Region One Tournament. The Blackbear United girls team advanced by going undefeated in group play before losing in the semi-final to the Virginia, the eventual Region One champion who advances to the National Tournament in Frisco, Texas later this month.
The U19 girls, the fourth Blackbear United team sent to regionals, had an incredible run. They faced a tough task in the opening game on Friday, June 29th facing the PDA Wildcats out of New Jersey who were the 2006 Regional Champion and National Finalist. Jessie Roberts (Bangor HS/Mercyhurst College) put Blackbear United on the scoresheet in the tenth minute with a left-footed blast from 25 yards out. Roberts hit the ball so hard the PDA keeper didn't even move as it sailed into the far top corner for the opening goal of the tournament. PDA leveled the score just before half-time off a corner kick to put the score 1-1 at half. In the second half, Blackbear United defended really well and absorbed a lot of pressure as PDA put on a passing clinic. They took the lead on a controversial goal at the 65 minute mark when a PDA player steamrolled Jaymie Coulston (Scarborough/UMaine), Blackbear's goalkeeper, and knocked both Coulston and the ball over the line for the lead. Blackbear United kept pressing and found the eventual game-tying goal just five minutes later when Megan Willette (Waterville/St. Joseph's) buried a shot in the side netting after being played in by Dana Riker (Cape Elizabeth/Bowdoin College). The last 20 minutes was very exciting and nerve-wracking as PDA kept attacking and creating chances. The Blackbear's and Coulston were up for every challenge with the final score 2-2.
On Saturday, June 30th, Blackbear United faced Moon Area Soccer Club out of PA West. Blackbear United dominated play from the opening whistle and outshot PA West 15-1 in the first 45 minutes yet the score was 1-1. Willette tallied her second goal of the tournament 20 minutes into the game to put Blakbear United up 1-0. Despite dominating play, PA West scored on their only shot of the half with one minute to go until half. The second half was more of the same with Blackbear United rifling shots from all distances, but no goals. With 10 minutes to play, Hailey Blackburn (York/UMaine) headed in the eventual game winner off a corner from Willette. The last five minutes was frantic as PA West pushed everything forward trying to level the game. In the 88th minute a shot rang off the crossbar just over Coulston's outstretched hands and then kicked to safety from Kellie LaJoie (York/Endicotte College). When the final whistle blew, Blackbear United remained undefeated with a 1-0-1 record and 4 points tied with PDA who defeated Mass 8-1. With the win, Blackbear United acheived the first win in club's history at the regional tournament.
On Sunday, July 1st, Blackbear United knew a win was needed to advance to the semi-finals by securing the wildcard spot. They also knew they'd be in for a tough game since Mass had defeated PA West 5-0 in their opening game. The game was back and forth in the first half with neither team scoring. Katie Delong (Presque Isle/UMaine) had a tough game assignment marking Mass's fast forward who will attend Boston College this fall. Delong kept her off the scoresheet the entire game. The second half was all Blackbear United as they opening the scoring at the 55 minute mark. Christine Labelle (Orono/UMaine) played a great ball to Laura Martel (Lewiston/UMaine) who broke free for a break-away goal and her first goal of the tournament. Five minutes later, Martel notched her second goal of the tournament in similar fashion as Willette split two defenders with a great pass to free Martel who raced to goal and buried her shot in the lower corner. Six minutes later, Martel completed the hat-trick when Willette freed Martel with another great assist. Hannah Breton (Greenville HS) scored her first goal of the tournament and increased Blackbear United's lead to 4-0, off a pass from Riker with 10 minutes left to play. Coulston earned her first shutout of the tournament. With the 4-0 win and three crucial points, Blackbear United became the first ever girls team from Maine to advance to the semi-final round by securing the wildcard spot.
Group A Winner - PWSI Cardinals (Virginia) - 3-0-0 (9 points)
Group B Winner - Albertson FC (Eastern New York) - 3-0-0 (9 points)
Group C Winner - PDA Wildcats (New Jersey) 2-0-1 (7 points) won tie-breaker with BUFC on goal differential
Wildcard - Blackbear United FC (Maine) 2-0-1 (7 points)
Blackbear United played a very good PWSI team in the semi-final game and the eventual Region 1 Champion. The first 10 minutes was back and forth with both teams feeling each other out. Blackbear United gave up the first goal of the game in the 18th minute and then the next 7 minutes proved costly. PWSI tallied 3 more goals in the next 7 minutes to put the game out reach for Blackbear United. In the second half, Blackbear United settled down and really played well. In the 65 minute PWSI tallied another goal and then added another 5 minutes later before Riker scored her first goal of the tournament off a great cross from Roberts. When the final whistle blew, PSWI advanced with a 6-1 win and finishing Blackbear United's great tournament run.
In the final, PWSI defeated PDA in the 7th round of penalty kicks after a 1-1 tie after 120 minutes of play. PSWI will represent Region 1 at the national tournament in Frisco, Texas.
Coaches Perspective (MJ Ball): "I don't think this great group of girls understands what they accomplished at this high-level tournament. They played against some great teams, loaded with division one players, regional players and national team players, who have been together since U12. The PDA team they tied has been to the regional finals (5 times) and national tournament (3 times). The PWSI team had 350 players tryout for their team and is loaded with ACC division one players. Our team was put together in March/April had four training sessions, attending the Needham Tournament (lost in finals) and was asked to perform a the highest level against some great competition. We had 3 high school players, 2 players who played club ball but not college soccer, five D1 players, 2 DII players and 5 DIII players. Our team just clicked and worked for each other and performed in outstanding fashion. It just goes to show that if you select the right personnel with great character, create a system and strategy and get them to believe in themselves and each other, that anything is possible. I am so proud of this team, their accomplishments, being part of Maine soccer history and know that each of them will cherish this experience for the rest of their lives. I know I will."
What An Accomplishment - Blackbear United U19 Girls not only created history with their great tournament run, but is now one of the top 16 teams in the country (4 Regions in US), and one of the top 4 teams in the region.
