3 Blackbear United Teams Capture Title at Maine Metro Tournament over February Break - The Maine Metro Tournament started on Monday, February 16th in Gorham with a strong message from Eastern Maine Soccer and Blackbear United. Blackbear United sent 10 teams to the tournament.
The U10 Boys coached by Felipe Arias began the day with the title after an impressive showing. They won some close battles 1-0, 2-1 and 2-0. Not only did they play well - they had a BLAST!! Congratulations U10 Boys!
What followed next couldn't have been scripted any better. Blackbear sent two U11 teams, one coached by Joe Kacer and the other coached by MJ Ball and Patsy Oversmith. Both teams played 3 games but did not play each other. The winner of the bracket was by total points with no playoffs due to the number of teams. The U11 team coached by Joe Kacer cruised to a 3-0 undefeated record with 10 goals for and 2 against. The U11 team coached by MJ Ball and Patsy Oversmith won the title over a tie breaker with the other U11 team after recording 3 straight victories scoring an impressive 18 goals and giving up 0. It was great to see both teams routing for each other and cheering for their friends. Great Job to both U11 Teams!
The 12 Boys coached by Dean Mekelburg and Chris Parsons sent two teams to the tournament with one team making it to the finals. Both teams played very well but the final games was one for the ages. Not only did the boys play well, but they had to battle some adversity. Their opponet was very physical and received the bulk of calls including a very questionable goal with less than 3 minutes to go. The boys could have reacted in a negative manner, but instead pulled together, staying positive and kept pushing for the equalizer. The equalizer came with 30 seconds to play when Tristan Gardner hit a volley to send the game into a 3 player per team penatly shootout.
Tristan Gardner stepped up and blasted the ball into the back of the net to put Blackbear up 1-0. Nick Gilpin played goalkeeper for the shootout and stopped the first shot he faced. Drew Parsons calmly stepped up and put Blackbear up 2-0 with a perfect shot to the upper left corner. Gilpin stepped back in net and blocked the MMFC shot to record the victory and championship for the U12 Boys.
Here is a recap of the other teams that went down to the MMFC tournament:
12 Girls - Went 0-2-1 playing some very close games while missing some key players and some "sick" players. Team had loads of fun and showed that they can battle with anyone.
14 Girls - Went undefeated at 2-0-2 and narrowly missed the playoffs. Scored some great goals and really stepped up their defense.
14 Boys - Lost the first game, but rebounded to win their next two just missing out on the playoff spot. Team really bonded well and showed that they are a team that can battle with anyone.
15 Girls - Went undefeated with three ties. Each game ended with a 0-0 scoreline. Team did a great job defensively and poured on the pressure to score goals. In the 3 games, they hit 7 posts and forced numerous saves for the opposing goalkeeper. Each game was better than the last with one thing missing - Goals.
17 Boys - Struggled due the weather to have enough players but had 7 dedicated players who made it down. Went 1-1-1 playing in the men's open division. Great job and great preparation for the upcoming season.
Great Job to all teams. You represented our club with class, distinction and some hardware!! Go Blackbear!!
Blackbear 13 Girls Make It to Seacoast Cup Final - Congratulations to the U13 Girls coached by Jay Pyne and Erin Caprara. They sent two teams to the very competitive Seacoast Cup in New Hampshire. One team played in the U13 age group and played very well winning 2 games and losing 1 but missed out on advancing. The other team entered the U14 age group and advanced to the final. They were up 1-0 and hit the post twice before allowing a goal just under 3 minutes to go to send the game into a 3 player shootout. They lost in the shootout, but played an amazing tournament.
Congratulations to both teams!!
3 Blackbear United Teams Win Winter Freeze Tournament Over Christmas Break - Congratulations to the U12 Boys, the U12 Girls (Pyne) and the U13 Girls on winning the Winter Freeze Tournament. The U12 Girls (Pyne) played the U12 Girls (Boulier/Kimball) in the final making it an all Blackbear final. The U13 Girls team won the U14 age group playing a year up. Great Job to these teams and to all the teams that represented our club with style and class!
