First Graduating Class Update
The first graduates of the Blackbear United club are now in their third year of college and continue to be successful in the classroom and in athletic pursuits.
Both goalkeepers of the Class of 2004 Blackbear United Men are key contributors for their respective college teams. Nate Lovitz plays for Bowdoin College and is leading the team to a 3-0 start to the 2006 season. Annually a top team in the NESCAC, the Polar Bears look to continue their success as a top Division III team in the country.
Collin Cunning is a goalkeeper for the New Jersey Institute of Technology, a Division I team out of the Atlantic Soccer Conference. Collin was named to the 2005 All-ASC Second Team with the second best save percentage in the conference. Both Nate and Collin have spent a summer playing for the Vermont Voltage of the USL Premier Development League.
Brandon Grudda is a forward for Bethel College in Mishawaka, IN. The Pilots are off to a 4-1-1 start to the season. Fellow 2004 Lawrence High School graduate Marshall Holmes is a member of the University of Maine men’s team. Marshall balances the demands of a being a Division I athlete with the academic demands of a chemical engineering major. Josh Bartlett is a defender at Husson College in Bangor, where the Eagles are 4-1-1 on the season.
Aaron Cross is a midfielder at Unity College, which is currently ranked number one in the USCAA national standings with a 4-1 record. Aaron was selected to the 2005 Yankee Conference First Team and has continued to participate with the Blackbear United club as assistant coach for the U-13 and U-16 boys teams.
Players from the class of 2004 Blackbear United Women also continue to participate in collegiate athletics. Hannah Marquis is a member of the University of Maine women’s team, while Gabby Cyr is a starting forward for the University of Southern Maine. Kaitlin Murphy is a scholarship athlete at Boston University on the crew team.
Blackbear Ladies Class of 2006
Fourteen members of the U-18 Girls team graduated from high school in June and will continue their education at various institutions across the country this fall.
Two players will pursue post-graduate/prep school study. Katie Bergeron, a graduate of Old Town High School, will attend the Taft School in Watertown, CT. Kari Havenvik graduated from John Bapst High School and will complete one additional year of studies in her home country before attending university.
Pennsylvania colleges were the choices of three Blackbear players. Jessie Roberts of Bangor will attend Mercyhurst College in Erie, PA to major in intelligence studies. Lila Maycock of Belfast will pursue environmental studies at Haverford College. Hampden Academy graduate Nori Francis-Mezger will attend Clarion University in Clarion, PA. All three ladies plan to play collegiate soccer.
Hamdpen Academy graduates Annaliese Lafayette and Jenna Shue will remain in the northeast to attend Cornell University and Dartmouth College respectively. Brenna Crothers of MDI plans to continue her academic and swimming career at Wheaton College in Norton, MA. John Bapst alumnus Megan Pritham will matriculate at Boston University.
Five players will attend school within the University of Maine system. Sam Mathieu of Belfast plans to major in business at the University of Southern Maine and play soccer for the Huskies. Presque Isle graduates Katie DeLong and Kylan Smith will be roommates at the University of Maine at Orono, studying animal/veterinary science and athletic training respectively. Both ladies are on the UMaine soccer team. Cait Cross will also attend the University of Maine at Orono to major in biochemistry/pre-med. Rozlyn Petersen participated in training for the Air National Guard this summer and will continue her studies at the University of Maine at Orono.
